For the same price you get more machine (and software apps - ironic, huh?) with the Newton, which is still more the high end (outside specialty Telxon) with the Pilot going after the low end data base user. Check out pencomputing.com

The present CE models are really in the middle. They won't replace laptops in spite of the Office connectivity (the only real selling point). But there is a lot of goodwill built in since it's flying the MS flag. And alas they are in the stores. Who will buy them ? In the beginning, the same people who bought high end HP omni's and calculators.

I'm not so sure about the speed of upgrading these things given their size. It took Apple years of dedication to it and outside help and questions about the black hole. Who is throwing the hardware investment money at it?

In any case, CE handhelds will not hurt Newton, but only expand the market in general (a good thing). I do think that the Newton is the closest to challenging the laptop as a connectivity/portable tool (another irony). It's platform is open. Maybe down the road the CE machines may challenge the Newton.

Sincerely,
Ben
