[ Magellan Corp ] has released a hand-held
satellite-based communicator. The portable GSC
100 product allows worldwide communication
via e-mail from a hand-held transmitter receiver.
GSC 100 is available for US$999 plus an
activation fee and access charge.

Nokia and Corporacion Digitel C.A. have signed an agreement for the
supply of a turnkey GSM 900 network in Venezuela. The multi-year
contract is valued at US$105m.

A recent survey carried out by Saratoga Systems has shown that investment
in IT systems for mobile workers is not seen as a priority.

Ericsson has signed a US$85m contract with the Sichuan Post and
Telecommunication Administration in Chengdu, China covering the
expansion of an existing GSM900 network.

Nokia has introduced a Nokia OK programme to provide customised
hand-painted designs for its 5100 series Xpress-on covers. The company
aims to increase personalisation of its mobile phones with the service, which
has an estimated price of US$50-US$75 within US markets.

APD Communications and RAM have introduced a new gateway for
installation on police local area networks to offer mobile data access on
local and national applications with intranet browsing.

Cellnet is expecting to cover 99% of the UK population this month with its
mobile phone service, reaching a 10% larger UK landmass than previously
attained.

Shaanxi Telecom Great Wall has introduced a CDMA network in Xian,
China, which was engineered, constructed and tested by Nortel.

ARM Holdings Plc has joined Ericsson, IBM, [ Intel ] , Nokia and
[ Toshiba ] in the Bluetooth wireless technology programme.

A wind-up mobile phone could soon be available. The Talker, as the unit is
known, enables the user to retrieve power from a generator by pulling a
cord about 15 times to stores energy for a five-minute conversation.

Nortel is introducing its Integrated Wireless Centrex solution on its
DMS-100 wireless system. The solution allows operators to extend DMS
Centrex a common PCS or cellular handset to a variety of capabilities
including the corporate VPN dialling plan.

Transcom Inc, a Taiwanese trunking operator, has selected Nokia to supply
its Actionet trunked mobile radio system.

[ QUALCOMM Inc ] has been contracted by Shenda Telephone
Company, a Chinese telecomms operator, to deploy a CDMA wireless
local loop system.

Qualcomm Inc has signed a major contract with Shyam Telelink Limited
covering the provision of a cdmaOne wireless local loop phone network in
the Rajasthan region of India.

Sonera, the Finnish telco, is providing a roaming service for users of its
ErMail paging service in Sweden and Denmark through the networks of
Tele Danmark.

Simoco, a digital radio developer, is planning to launch an independent
forum, primarily as a source of information for the emergency services and
utilities.

[ Lucent Technologies ] has introduced a dual-zone version of its TransTalk
Digital Wireless System that covers two zones of up to 500,000 square feet
each, doubling the capacity where mobile terminals are in range.
