John, the latest i am hearing is that things at the A/W part of SGI just keep slipping away. Maya NT users have at least a year wait til the first update since release, and SGI users will get but a minor update near the end of this year.
after alienating most of the Alias Poweranimator user base by trying to shove Maya down our throats, saying no more PA so we must switch to Maya, A/W has started telling us that PA will continue to be developed so we can pay $5K a seat year after year.
the worst insult is that after 3 years of saying that the Alias components of Maya were coming, a friend just told me that it's only in the past month that the Maya coders have seen PA particles and dynamics for the first time.
the arrogance that some marketing guy at A/W (now departed) would commit the company to the lie of trying to roll the Alias user base over to an upgraded wavefront product surpasses any standard set by any politician.
look at the long trail of SGI software efforts on the scrapheap, and please offer some thoughts on how this carnage can be avoided for the products i still love using like PA.
oh, i know everyone at SGI is consoled by the secret knowledge that Octane class NT boxes and beyond are looming, and the arrogance and stance that come with having the hottest pc ever built will erase all slights...
but this disorder runs deep, and without a fresh attitude, this too will head straight to hell.
