"Warning: Web Selling Isn't Cheap"
This was a front page article in Computerworld issue Oct 12 1998
(at www.computerworld.com...no attempt to paste it here).
In summary, shows box comparing different companys' expense profile: "Send in the Accountants" is the box title. Expense as Pct of Total Revenues
Under "Online Companies" it shows:
Amazon 39%
CDNow Inc 77%
Cyberian Outpost 38%
N2K Inc. 215% !! (obviously, heheh, spent more than income)
Onsale Inc 16%

under "Real-World Companies" (I love it, esp CW) it shows:
Barnes & Noble 20%
The Home Depot 20%
Musiclan Stores Corp 30%
Wal-Mart Stores 16%

As if more fodder was needed! Oh well, with a thousand tiny cuts, maybe the mighty will fall!

Other note from article:
customer-acquisition costs are "about $34 per consumer"
