I just can't see how the "generals" are able to hold their ground so firmly when the "men" have run away. It is this contradiction which I find so hard to understand. After all, the "generals" are not stupid ! And, "they" can see as much as anyone.

If what you say is true, that the bear market will or could end when the Dow gets creamed, that can happen anytime. Even in 2000. It doesn't have to happen tomorrow.

And, since it's merely symbolic, the "sword of Damocles" could even just hang --- for many years --- without falling.
