NEW YORK, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Slack demand for discretionary products like clothes and furniture muted growth in U.S. retail sales last month, suggesting consumers may be scaling back spending because of financial market turmoil, analysts said.

''September is perhaps the beginning of a reaction to the falloff in stock prices and a decline in consumer confidence,'' said Brian
Fabbri, chief economist at Paribas Capital Markets.

Government data showed retail sales rose 0.3 percent overall in September and 0.1 percent excluding auto transactions. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast, on average, a 0.6-percent overall sales gain and a 0.2-percent ex-autos rise. >>
