Here is the non-scientist explanation of Occam's razor. <GULP> It is used when there is more than one theory that is consistent with the known facts. Occam's razor says that usually it is the simplest of the theories that is correct.

If I may editorialize, it is after science has done its part that you have to use that tried and true method; using your gut instincts. Or as you put it, the smell test.
