Frank, it is no wonder there is such allure in diamond mining! Check out these figures:
"Etaki mine is expected to be producing 10,000 carats a day, about 4% of global production; early production expected to be worth $130 US per carat."
That's about $2,000,000 Canadian per day.
And look what it's doing for the local economy:
"The mine will provide about 830 permanent jobs over its 22-year life. About 70% will be filled by northerners and about 30% of those will go to aboriginals."
Mmhmm.

Re. Ekati mine on CBC TV show -- discussed was the 7 year term to build the mine up to production, at a cost of about a billion dollars, and how it's expected to last 17yrs (?). Catherine Gignac (mining analyst) explained how this mine will make Canada the #4 world producer, and also we have Diavik (RTZ, Aber) coming on stream in 2-3yrs. She discussed how the mine-opening is not so timely since Japan, as a key diamond buyer, has dropped back (and other markets), but that "we are at the bottom of the market, so ..." |
