Two major networking companies unveiled switches for LANs, products that add yet more capacity to meet the demands of bandwidth-hungry applications. Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent (company profile), as expected, started selling its Cajun Campus family of switches, running the gamut from stackabledesktop switches to high-end, chassis-based products that act as the LAN backbone. The devices range in capacity from 4 gigabits per second to 80 Gbps, and in price from $1,695 to $23,000. The Cajun Campus line consists of rebranded products from three acquisitions -- of LANNet,Prominet, and Agile Networks. Meanwhile, Santa Clara, Calif.-based 3Com (company profile) introduced the packet-switching version of its next-generation LANswitch, the CoreBuilder 9000. This switch is intended to be used as the core of a LAN,supporting connections to the wiring closet and edge-networking devices.
