Beer bottle explosions maim drinkers dailynews.yahoo.com Wednesday October 14 11:04 AM EDT BEIJING (Reuters) - China's growing army of beer drinkers faces a more serious hazard than bulging bellies or morning hangovers -- exploding beer bottles that injured 470 people this summer. The beer bottle explosions caused when shoddy glass bottles burst in the summer heat maimed 27 of the wounded, many with eye injuries, the China Economic Times said on Wednesday. Explosions during the July-September peak beer drinking season were up 130 percent over 1997 and accounted for 79 percent of consumer product safety accidents nationwide, it said. The problem stems from a bottle shortage which causes some brewers to repeatedly reuse containers long past their shelf life. Beer, at about 3.0-5.0 yuan ($0.36-0.60) per bottle, is too pricey for China's hundreds of millions of farmers, who prefer the far cheaper buzz of sorghum spirits. But China is fast climbing up the world's beer consumption and production charts and aims to brew 24 million tons in 2010, which would make it the world's leading producer.
