Best Buy Opens Five Stores in New England

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- From a steaming bowl of clam chowder to the majesty and tradition of a night at
Fenway Park, many things define New England and give it character. Now, Best Buy (NYSE: BBY - news), the nation's
largest retailer of electronics, computers, appliances and music, will be part of that atmosphere as it opens its first stores in the
area.

Grand Opening festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, with the doors opening to the public at noon in these
locations:

Three additional stores will open in Nashua and Danvers, N.H., and Cambridge, Mass., prior to Thanksgiving.

providing shoppers with the best selection and competitive prices at convenient locations.''

Best Buy will introduce its ''Now That's a Great Idea!'' Community Service Grants program as part of the Grand Opening
events. This program, run in cooperation with America's Promise -- The Alliance for Youth, will provide youth ages eight to 14
with resources to develop leadership skills through community service. Young people will have an opportunity to apply for
$3,000 in grants to design service projects, like park clean-ups and providing nutritional meals to undernourished young people.

As part of the Grand Opening excitement, Best Buy is sponsoring two special sweepstakes from Oct. 16th through Nov. 28th.
Customers can enter the ''Tune-Up and Tune-In'' sweepstakes to win a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle with a complete car audio
system. Winners will be selected from each store for the ''Best Buy Great Prizes Sweepstakes'' for prizes including $2,500
worth of Whirlpool appliances, a Hewlett Packard 333MHz computer, and a complete Yamaha Home Theater System.

In addition, musician Lenny Kravitz will perform a free concert presented by City of Boston, Mayor Thomas M. Menino and
Best Buy from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15 in City Plaza. The concert will be a great chance to see Kravitz for those who
missed out on tickets to his sold-out show on Friday at the Orpheum.
