Headline: Glenayre Successfully Trials Intersystem Messaging Technology In
Europe

======================================================================
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- As a significant step in
messaging between network service providers, the Integrated Network Group of
Glenayre Technologies Inc. announced today that it has successfully completed
the first of a series of intersystem messaging trials held recently in Europe.
Glenayre sent and received voice messages with other vendors' platforms using
the Glenayre MVP(R) modular voice processing system and Voice Profile for
Internet Messaging protocol (VPIM).
"Glenayre's strategy is to make voice messaging as easy as sending an e-
mail to a friend across the country," said Dan Case, president of Glenayre's
Integrated Network Group. "The Glenayre focus is on messaging solutions for
mobile and fixed network operators. Our goal is to enable subscribers to send
and receive messages from anywhere, at anytime, to anyone, on any network -
regardless of the media."
The messaging trials are being conducted in Europe throughout 1998 and
1999, and will demonstrate messaging capabilities and compatibility between
the platforms of different voice messaging vendors utilizing the VPIM
protocol. The trial was demonstrated at the Fall International Association for
Voice Mail and Voice Processing Services (VMA) conference in Athens, which was
sponsored by Glenayre. VPIM is the industry standard for intervendor message
networking. The ultimate goal of the VMA is to announce and promote the
availability of an inter-network service provider message networking service.
"The initial response to the technology and its capability during the
trial was very exciting," said Bill Edwards, senior vice president of
worldwide sales of Glenayre's Integrated Network Group. "This capability
builds upon the other highly successful messaging tools, such as Digital
Networking, Direct Dial, and Rapid Response, that Glenayre already provides to
many of its customers."
The Glenayre Digital Networking application for the MVP system allows
seamless voice messaging between MVP platforms on a wide area basis. For
example, large service providers who have multiple locations and need to
communicate with various field offices can deposit a message in the mailbox of
a subscriber using a data link in their network, instead of a valuable voice
circuit.
Glenayre's Direct Dial feature provides subscribers with the ability to
make multiple calls, including direct-dial long distance calls, from inside
the voice mailbox.
With Rapid Response, another application for the Glenayre MVP platform,
subscribers obtain a call back number from a caller (either automatically or
by input from the caller). Once the call back number is captured, subscribers
can return the call from their mailbox with a single keystroke and then return
to the messaging session once the call is finished.
The International Association for Voice Mail and Voice Processing Services
(VMA) membership includes more than 200 service providers, network operators
and vendors worldwide. The VMA provides a forum to review the industry's
progress, discuss market potential and identify the needs of this ever-growing
market. Additional information is available at www.tbw.ch/vma.
For over 30 years, Glenayre Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:GEMS) has been
developing and providing leading edge personal telecommunication systems.
Glenayre's Intelligis products enable mobile and fixed network operators to
increase revenues, reduce subscriber churn and improve network reliability and
efficiency with enhanced services, network management and operational support
systems. With over 2,000 employees and with products installed in over 100
countries, Glenayre's net sales exceeded $451 million in 1997. Additional
