Well. If this market share drop is the only reason for the panic then I am happy because this is nothing new. I remember in summer 94 when SUNW was at $18 pre-split, everyone was panicking that the work station growth is going down and MSFT will eat everybody. Now SUN trades at split adjusted (one split in 95 and one in 96) $104 - over 5 times. Not bad. Not bad at all.

OK. The point we should note is that though the Unix market seems to be growing less than the PC market, growth rate for SUNW is accelerating because they are gaining market share every year. I don't think HP or SGI or DEC can now compete with SUN in Unix market. Unix and SUN have become synonyms to each other.

May be in order to keep the growth momentum, SUN has to cut its workstation prices and come close to high end PCs. I think they are already in the right direction. It is not a question of PC killing Unix or vice versa. As long as businesses take care of their customers and keep them happy they will do well. It is that simple. Majority of the business failures happen ONLY because they don't listen to their customers. SUN's hold in Unix market seems to be increasing day by day and they are also dedicated to their customers. They are pro active in cutting prices (they did recently too). Only problem I see with SUN is its margins dropping a little but they know this very well and are well prepared. They are no AAPL. They are headed by Scott McNealy one of the smartest and dynamic CEO's in the valley.

So, just look at the long term. SUNW has rewarded its long term share holders really nicely. With Java's momentum they can sell more and more boxes - work station or Java station or what ever. They have a good story now. That's it.

Just my 2c.
