Here's a prediction.

AMD will "DELAY" the K7 introduction until late 1999/2000 while it rearchitects the K7 to employ ON CHIP L2 cache.

This, of course, will be AFTER AMD verifies that the current K7 will not be competitive with Intel's Cascades and Coppermine chips that will be hitting the streets in mid to late 1999.


I don't think that will happen. AMD will need to sell the K7 regardless, if only to achieve some market share and keep the MB makers happy. Previously, with AMD riding on Intel's socket coat-tails (whether good or bad), AMD could afford to be 3 months late and still have a market. AMD can't do that with the K7.

I can see AMD selling the K7 as is at first and re-engieering it to come up with a K7-2 about 6 months after the original K7 is introed. (about the same time the .18um ramp starts).
