September Statistical Report

WASHINGTON, October 14 -- Inventories of distillate fuel oil, used to manufacture heating and diesel fuels, reached 152.7 million barrels at the end of September, 10.1 percent more than last September, according to the American Petroleum Institute. This large inventory going into the winter heating season is higher than the seasonal peak inventories of the last eleven winters. On the East Coast, the largest heating oil market, distillate stocks reached nearly 73 million barrels, about 12 million barrels more than this time a year ago, API's Monthly Statistical Report said.

Crude oil stocks totaled 319.7 million barrels, a 5.2 percent increase compared to the end of last September, but down 3.9 percent compared to last month. Imported crude oil in September averaged 8.520 million barrels a day (b/d), a 3.6 percent drop compared to September 1997.

omestic production of crude oil in September averaged 6.192 million barrels a day, which was 4.5 percent less than September 1997.
