When I've shorted and held the short for a week or so, money got released to me in this way.

DLJ does this by increasing my equity, and thus buying power, but no interest. But the original short "sale" (which is a debit) does not generate interest.

And the way my current shorts (and gold) are doing, my equity is moving in the wrongo direction!!
