Mohan,

I believe that Earl the Pearl stated that CPQ expected to have sales driven by Y2K hardware purchases as well as the low cost PC and the internet growth.. In this particular case I think Earl is confirming MD opinions.

IMO, the fears of a recession in the computer industry as a consequence of problems in the world financial system is as yet way overstated. Results reported so far by INTC, AAPL, CPQ do not bear out this amount of extreme pessimism.

As long as Japan is committed to working out its problems, I think that we will see a robust 1999 in the computer industry. There may be a few more scares due to uncertainties in the solutions and disappointments with disputes and delays but Japan has to change the their economy to prosper.

Alas, the capital equipment companies may not recover fully for another year due to over capacity in many segments of the industry. The internet will continue to grow because it has become essential to doing business in the world. As a consequence internet enabled PC will continue to fly off the shelves along with the servers that are required. Add to this Y2K conversions and 1999 is shaping up to be the best year ever in the PC industry.

Microsoft will be making money off both the iMAC and the PC next year. It will also be making money off NT 5.0.

People are still nervous about the crisis triggered by Japan and the hedge funds a few weeks ago. Hopefully the hedge funds are now unwound. Japan is on a meandering path towards resolution of its banking issues and the Second Bang in the new year.

Europe is strong and headed towards the Eurocurrency in the new year. Interest rates are dropping around the world. So lots of new things are going on that should have a positive impact on business.

The chicken littles on this thread can only play a one string guitar.
They are the self involved messengers of fear.

DELL should move up next week after options expire. We are close enough to max pain to expect a close in that vicinity on Friday.
Volume and volatility are shrinking.

Regards,

Jim Kelley
