TeleManagement Forum Catalyst Team Connects Live Interoperable Equipment Types At TeleManagement World; Telecom Industry Group Broadens Commitment To Cooperation On Business Issues
DALLAS, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- TeleManagement World, Dallas - CiTR, DSC/Alcatel, Euristix, Fujitsu Network Communications, HarmonyCom, Lucent Technologies, NEC, Nortel Networks, Tellabs and UH Communications today announced the launch of the TeleManagement Forum's Connection Management Catalyst Group's Multi-Protocol and SONET Interoperability Showcase Demonstration at TeleManagement World, Dallas. For the first time, ten telecom equipment and management software vendors together with a telecom operator site have cooperated across the globe to fulfill a working solution which inter-operates seven equipment types through open interfaces developed by the group members.

''The Connection Management Catalyst Group has produced a working solution that will change the way in which operators will manage their networks. This is the first time the market has demonstrated a management solution which can embrace and interface diverse networks seamlessly to create end-to-end services,'' Christine Pageot-Millet, senior manager, Networks, France Telecom (CNET).

The SONET Interoperability Demonstration, using technology from Euristix, Fujitsu, Lucent, Nortel and Tellabs is a groundbreaking effort in developing a standard open software interface that will make it easier for service providers to manage their multi-vendor networks from a single monitor. The companies are focusing their joint effort on the Element Management Layer (EML) to Network Management Layer (NML) interface using CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) as the basis for the open interface. This is a practical approach that is consistent with the Telecommunication Management Network (TMN) framework.

''Carriers all want open interfaces so they are not dependent on proprietary or one single interface type '', said Ken Kelly, senior analyst, Dataquest. ''The usefulness of the management interface depends on how much EMS information will feed into the NMS and how many vendors participate and specify the interface,'' he added.

The Multi-protocol demonstration has brought together a number of key industry players to produce a truly automated, end-to-end connection management solution. Equipment vendors (Fujitsu, NEC and DSC/Alcatel), Connection Management software vendors (CiTR and Harmonycom) and a mediation software vendor (UHC) have combined real products to produce an innovative solution to address the business challenges faced today by Network Operators and Service Providers. Challenges that include rapid automated provisioning of high quality and maintainable services made up of end-to-end connections in Multi-technology, multi-vendor environments.

From a service layer application, the demonstration shows actual provisioning and maintenance of an end-to-end service across a typical Telco networking environment (ADSL/ATM access network, ATM across SDH transmission). Furthermore, this is achieved using open interfaces in an open technology environment which is demanded by today's Service Providers' highly competitive, customer focused markets.

''The catalyst projects are an integral part of TeleManagement Forum's SMART TMN initiative to drive the development and industry acceptance of real products and real solutions to the telecom industry's software needs,'' said Jim Warner, marketing director of TeleManagement Forum. ''We are very pleased that the Connection Management team has responded so successfully to the challenge.''
