Ron --

I'm not sure about streamed video, but I did have a long chat with an engineer at GTE today and learned about a new product. He said ADSL's great and that CAP uses less power and is ready now whereas DMT is adaptable and can be deployed on far more existing lines---yaddy, yaddy, yaddy---and then went on to tell me about a company (I think private) called TUT Systems that's developing a 10Mbps ethernet adapter for use in hotels. He said as you checked in you would be given an extender for your laptop to gain access to a T-1 and all the speed you'd ever need. It's still a year or two out, but it certainly sounds interesting. It wouldn't compete with ADSL because of its distance limitations.

He also mentioned VDSL which he said GTE is just now beginning to explore.

When I queried him on Amati's Overture 8s being used in their trials, he didn't seem to know which chips were inside. I was hoping he'd be able to discuss the differences in power consumption between the LSI chip and those being developed by MOT and TI. Apparently that's not his area of expertise.

He thought GTE would be announcing 3 to 4 more trials (currently under way) some time in the next month. The rollout announcements he thought would be some time in the next quarter. (Guess I'll stop holding my breath on that one.)

Someone posting on the AOL (MF) Amati board said he'd heard TI was close to announcing their progress on its chip. Since this is now third-hand, I'd definitely put that in the rumor column.

After following Amati for a year now, I realize it's very much like putting together a puzzle. Some pieces may fit eventually, but have to be set aside while others are put in first. Who said doing jigsaw puzzles was a waste? :)

Regards,

Pat
