Hi Frank:

Regarding OSI and company names, the other company you
were trying to recall is Level One Communications. It makes fast
(and soon Gigabit) Ethernet transceiver and repeater chips, DSL
chips (MDSL and HDSL2), and T1/E1 and Sonet chips. Their
name was selected as a direct reference to the OSI
nomenclature, but they recently purchased Acclaim Communications
which makes chips for Layers 2, 3 and 4 gigabit Ethernet switches.
So, the Level One name is no longer accurate, but the company
has no plan to rename itself.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
