Mind you, I'm not exactly sure that the 400 is actually the K6-2+ but it makes sense...
It must be easier to make K6-2+s in volume than K6-3s if yields are hit by the on chip L2...so while ramping the K6-3 sell off the ones with faulty L2s (or disable the L2)as K6-2+s until you can tune the process to the point where you can ship K6-3s in volume.
This is analogous to what the are doing with the K-7...make 'em without an on die L2 and later when the bugs are worked out, intro the K7 with L2 in the die. This way you're still putting out latest generation chips earlier.
