InfoWorld has an excellent article on MMX:

infoworld.com

Notable quote:

"MMX will bring higher-quality graphics to less-expensive systems, but high-quality 3-D representations, for example, are still going to require hardware support, predicted Patrick Lucci, vice president of marketing at Hercules Computer Technology Inc. in Fremont, Calif. "

"All MMX does is raise the bar," Lucci said.

MMX is fixed point and of very little use to 3D. Even those in the Wintel camp are looking at only a 20% effective performance gain due to MMX. Thus the impact should be small if any. It probably will continue to raise awareness of the 3D graphics potenial and market, which can't be bad for SGI though.

On the other hand, if Intel ever gets its "floating point" story right for 3D graphics, THAT could impact SGI, but that's a whole different story (and holy war) and not one they (Intel) seem to be addressing in the near future. P7 at the earliest.
