Lou Gerstner however, came up through the cash management and PR side of baseball. Having a pitcher that can throw 100 mph, he thinks, can put fannies into the seats now. The kid can learn to pitch OJT - so he thinks.

Okay, okay - no more of this baseball stuff - I promise.

What are you talking about? IBM was shipping 4-layer metal chips in our computers back when most of the rest of the world was trying to figure out how to do 2. Semi-conductors at IBM started LONG before Mr. Gerstner arrived. This kid knows how to pitch and is demonstrating it.

I expected more from Tony and Paul, who know better, than to equate process line capability to chip MHz. Its a function of how much logic you want to accomplish in a cycle. In fact just last week IBM announced (and is shipping) a new 64 bit RISC processor that runs at only 200 MHz. But it also happens to execute 8 instructions per clock cycle and the resulting floating-point performance is very impressive. Going the other way, our research group has built and demonstrated and announced a 1 GHz test chip that I believe was basically an integer unit of a processor with some fancy new circuits (NOT devices or process). And that was in a process that is at least one level behind IBMs current shipping state-of-the-art.

Hope I didn't come across too defensive but I've been seeing some pretty ridiculous stuff here lately.
