Technocrat,

Your point on the future true 'SAN' is well taken. However, I believe there is enough room for both 'networked SAN' and 'server base SAN'. Lack of better terms, 'networked SAN' is cheaper computers which issue read/write operations across the 'net' to access data from storage devices. I don't think this scenario will take shape anytime soon(we may see some introductions of such in 1999). It is the 'server base SAN' which still rules in the near future. SUNW,HWP and the like no doubt are running scare but I believe they can produce efficient powerful servers which 'networked SAN' can't match in terms of performance and control. Centralized data depository, management and data integrity will keep these powerful 'server base SAN' in business for a long time. Much the same like mainframe didn't fade away when many predicted PC will take over. Clustering will another trend to look out for. FC is the enabling technology. It dosen;t matter which way the market is moving towards. FC switching is here to stay and will prosper.
