The bad news is that I am stumped as to finding the pattern of how to construct a good net.

If there is one thing that I have learned during the past year, it's that there is no pattern. A setup that seems to work for one stock will fail miserably for others. If your initial choice for relateds is a good one, sometimes all that is necessary to make a world of difference is deleting one of them or changing an influence period. Yes, it is trial and error.
