Jim: Other news from the fringe: both Paul Hansen and Chris O'Meara have landed at TIBCO as CFO and deputy. And I see that Adaptec's strategic ally Chaparral Technologies has formed yet another strategic alliance--with Retrieve (software) "to develop advanced Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions for some of the most pressing problems facing IT managers and network administrators."

On the earnings front, yesterday Interphase Corporation (provider of high-end server connectivity for enterprise networks) reported 25 percent increase in revenue over FY97 3Q

-- "Polley noted that the overall increase in revenues during the third quarter was attributable to increases in revenues from the company's ATM, SCSI, Fast Ethernet, Fibre Channel and wide area networking (WAN) product lines. As expected, revenues declined for older technologies such as FDDI and Ethernet. "As part of our strategic plan, we're continuing to invest in the technologies that we believe have the greatest potential for growth, including Fibre Channel, WAN and remote access, and ATM technologies," Polley said.

With Intel's surprise and some other positive signs of maybe a turnaround in the industry, we just might see a minor surprise with Adaptec. Or maybe not.
