There is a huge difference between Pairgain and Ciena. Ciena has a proven, needed technology that is already being used and helps phone companies to create more bandwidth. Pairgain had/has an up and coming technology (HDSL)that, like ISDN, never really gained a foot hold. RBOCs are still experimenting with xDSL products, but nobody really wants to commit because there are different standards. This is just like ISDN which took over 10 years to finally catch on in the US, but it certainly didn't make the impact everyone expected.
