I e-mailed Tom Scottino with a question about when the quarter ends. Here is the reply I received:

"Tellabs uses what is called a 52-53 week calendar. Under this calendar, each quarter contains 14 weeks and is divided into three periods (five weeks, five weeks and four weeks). With this calendar quarters are always end on a Friday. If you look at the earnings release we issued today, you'll see that the third quarter of 1997 ended on September 26, not September 30. With regard to your assertion that extra days were included in the quarter, you should note that our second quarter of 1998 ended on July 3."

I think this puts the matter to rest.
