Can you allow for Greenspan producing this calculated event as an
indication of serious concerned about some big news not yet in the
public knowledge..? What would require this kind of interferance..?

Perhaps something is about to unwind in the global credit markets
that would require boosting US stocks. Say more troubles in the big
money center banks in the US or Japan or ECU.

I expect it was done with a reason....perhaps only as "across the bow"
warning shot to the short players and to those who over leverage their
positions?
