The presence of Cookies are one of the ways a site customize the way you get information in a way you desire. They are one of the easier ways for a programmer to figure out the way you want to view their site upon return. The information is stored in your cookie.txt file. It is an extremely small file and all cookies go to the same file. I have not become aware of a way that any site can read the portion of the cookie file from that of another site. I don't mean to sound condescending if you already were aware of the above.

As for the marketing of IntelliQuest:
you fill out a form that includes a pre-checked box that asks if you'd like to receive information about similar products in the future. The marketing information is given by the person. As the information stored on the cookies. They can't find out anything about you that you haven't already typed to that site.

Encryption is the best answer for those that don't want to have any way of a file to become available to anyone other than oneself.
