I agree with your emotional sentiments but feel that the FED had no choice. If the banks falter (thanks to their lending practice) then we all falter as well (in our incarnations as stock-holders, borrowers of money etc.)

I am somewhat a middle of the road guy with respect to government manipulation. The free-market (comletely unrestrained) is a cruel thing (you sink or swim) and as a society there would be too many casualties if the free-market were allowed to go unchecked.

The socialist economies failed because of incredible central control and crony-ism. The completely free-market economy model might fail due to no controls at all.
