The banks have taken over controlling interest in some hedge funds (for example in the case of Long Term). What this implies is that they will slowly absorb the fund's loss over several quarters rather than having to face an immediate default of several billion dollars.

I don't know if they will be willing to lend in as cavalier a fashion as they have been doing. In fact, they may not want to lend at all!
