I am not sure if this is legal (if loss from one investment can be used to offset gains from another) but, the only reason some one might need to sell INTC for tax purposes is if they were to pair it with a loss from another stock. Since investment losses are subject to max deduction ($3000/yr ?), one may end up with a net loss of only $3000 (or what ever max deductio is) only by selling some gains.
