A few short stories:

Reuters (12/31/96) -- A Brazilian military police officer received third degree burns on his leg and hip when a cellular phone on
his belt exploded last Sunday. The officer, Walcir Ferreira da Costa, says, "I think I would have been killed if I was using [the
phone] at the time." A police spokesman said laboratory technicians had inspected the phone and could not find a cause for the
occurrence. The spokesman did not know which company made the phone.

"New Chips Are Key to Smaller Handsets"

New York Times (12/30/96) P. D3; Schiesel, Seth -- The New Jersey company Anadigics is a leading producer of a new chip
for wireless phones that is comprised of gallium arsenide rather than the more commonly-used silicon. While gallium arsenside
parts can cost roughly 30 percent more than silicon components, gallium arsenide allows manufacturers to produce phones that
are smaller and have longer battery life. The arrival of PCS companies has helped increase the business for gallium aresenide
products. Analyst Dale Pfau says Anadigics is the biggest supplier of gallium arsenide power amplifiers for wireless phones, but
it can expect competition from companies associated with the military-like Celeritek. Still, Pfau says that Anadigics can
accumulated such a large lead, that it "will probably continue [its] dominance in a very fast-growing market."
