Burt Masnick. Re: "It's part mob or group psychology, part numbers projection and, if we are honest, sometimes part luck (good or bad)." While these explain SHORT RUN gains and losses, they do not IMHO explain LONG TERM gains & losses. Those are due to the triumph of RATIONALITY over EMOTION. Listen to Warren Buffett explain it in a recent Fortune article where Buffett & Gates talked to students (7/20/98).

"The reason I got here is not IQ. I'm sure you'll be glad to hear. The big thing is rationality. I always look at IQ and talent as representing the horsepower of the motor, but that the output--the efficiency with which that motor works--depends on rationality. A lot of people start out with 400 horsepower motors but only get a hundred horsepower of output.

So why do smart people do things that interfere with getting the output they're entitled to? It gets into habits and character and temperament, and behaving in a rational manner. Not getting in your own way."

Intel represents one of the best investments on a RATIONAL basis. The fact that many others don't see it that way doesn't bother me one bit. In fact I like it. I'm much more nervous when people all jump on board one of my stocks and bid it up. 'Cause sure as hell when the market or company hits a snag, they're gone and the stock drops way below its intrinsic value.

Just my 2¢.
