With the HP/Intel Merced processor on the way; Sun may be looking at a steady erosion of their hardware business. Unless they want to become a software company, they need to address this threat. From a performance standpoint, Merced is going to blow UltraSparc out of the water (or any RISC processor for that matter). While Sun has stuck with RISC technology, HP has moved on to PA RISC and will soon move to Merced. SGI (another RISC-based company) is faced with a similar problem.

On the plus side, DECs alpha processor hasn't been able to find an installed base. This has been very good for Sun, HP etc...In addition, the IBM/Motorola 2K processor is probably 2 years away. However, the Merced is a leap in performance that poses a very real threat to Sun and the RISC processor. Add to this the fact that there is no compatibility between the two architectures.

Best regards,

Terry
