I'm sure you said this to 'stir-the-pot'; the reason firms are moving to the likes of PSFT is that that offer a solution that solves their immediate need (Y2K) and their long term needs (enhancements). But the main compelling reason people like PSFT is that a staff of few can implement and maintain upgrades to their mission-critical systems. The days of old where every firm had their own IT software systems is gone - PSFT will rollout upgrades to their software and with adequate planning the upgrade can be installed in a weekend (not easy but possible). As for the number of systems the skys the limit; how many companys need database software, how many need servers, how many PCs are you planning to buy in your lifetime.... point is that technology is evolving and upgrades are a fact of business! As for SEBL you may have something there (unsure of thier products) but the SFA business is very tough.... much togher then the ERP (and MRP) arena! Lastly, 'stick with companies with hundreds of products'.... SMOD only makes one product that I am aware of (computer memory) and the bulk of its business is with Compaq - this contridicts the exact point you are trying to make. Sure PSFT only make ERP software but the software runs on all platforms, under all databases and can operate in several languages! Wouldn't it be better to focus on your core business and perfect those products as opposed to venturing into 'hundreds' of business endevours?
