Actually, I spent most of the year 50% in cash. In a way, I'm glad I did. What pisses me off is that 25% went into speculative NAZ stocks (UGH). I bought ALYA, OZON, HDIE, AAPL, and ASPT between Oct 97 and Mar 98.
Only AAPL is performing (obviously).
Right now, I'm on the sides. Why? 2 reasons....I am starting an Internet business, and I need all my spare cash to pay the mortgage and feed the kids. AND...I haven't had the time to find stocks I like (not that there are a whole hell of a lot out there).
I tried daytrading and had some beginners luck...then got hammered.
The only thing I've been REALLY successful at: giving my advice successfully. I have made alot of money for several friends two ways. One, I have a knack for predicting economic turns and trends (macroeconomic, not Market performance), and there is money to be made on that. Two, I occasionally read interesting information on ideas that catch my fancy, and expound upon them. Typically, I know the companies involved and like their outlook. Rarely do I actually invest in them because like anything else.....when I do it, I get killed. When my friends do it, they get rich.
