I disagree about selling a gainer not having a benefit in "burning up" another loss. Specifically with INTEL, you could buy back INTCW and essentially have the same thing. Also, some states like Pennsylvania do not let you take net losses from Schedule D against other income. (Gains are taxable, losses are not deductible...heads I win, tails you lose...but that's a whole 'nuther bulletin board). So it is to your advantage to offset losses with gains (like the hypothetical situation discussed here).
