While there is always a chance that a "paradigm shift" can displace the Wintel platform, it seems appropriate to ask, "When do paradigm shifts occur?" I think that the best explanation I have seen is that, "Paradigm shifts occur when the old paradigm cannot solve the problems with the current 'system'". Hence the demise of the monopoly of the mainframe which was not flexible enough to handle the needs of individual users and the needs of the enterprise. The arrival of the NC and NetPC are attempts to solve problems that the PC alone cannot solve. We will see if they represent niches or a paradigm shift. HL
