Jim, the issue is whether one is trading or investing. Follow the technicals when trading ... one-two steps at a time in the stair-case theory that Don Sew as well as the media is espousing. For the long-term investor, pick a good value point and take investment positions ... averaging down if need be, averaging up if called for.

I have little doubt that cyclicals like CAT, PD, DD .. will be here in the long-term and be much higher than today ... even if they may go 10-20 percent lower between now and then. With a 5-10 year investment horizon ... there are more worthwhile things to do in life than worry about measly optimal entry points. The key is stock selection, whether trading or investing. The market provides the context for the time being ... the critical factor is one's time horizon.
