Marty,
<<Which of the build to order OEMs (Gateway, Dell, etc.) makes the best portable? >>

I have been very happy with a new Dell Inspiron 266MHz P-II which I purchased for 2300 bucks about 2 months ago. But IBM has just announced a new i-series of Thinkpad that is very very attractive. Check it out at:

pc.ibm.com

By the way, based on my experience, BTO (Build-to-order) doesn't necessarily translate to "configure-to-order". There were several combinations of things I could not get in terms of configuration when I ordered the Dell. Also I believe IBM service is incomparable.

By the way...if you are going to make presentations do not even think of using anything other then the Active matrix screen (which is increasingly becoming standard on many product lines).

Best,
Stitch
