Weak dollar hurts Airbus, chief says

by Bloomberg News

PARIS - Airbus Industrie Chief Executive Noel Forgeard said the dollar's recent decline against European currencies is a calamity for the plane maker, whose revenues are in dollars but costs are in European currencies.

The German mark and the French franc have strengthened about 12 percent against the dollar since April 1. While companies can take measures to hedge against financial risk, a lower-than-expected dollar can hurt earnings.

"This (dollar) sets even higher standards for us in terms of productivity, and it makes the necessity of integrating our operations even more acute," said Forgeard, in a speech at a Paris business conference. "We hope that one day we will be able to sell our planes in euros - this would give us even greater security."

Forgeard, who's been chief executive since April, also suggested that his company possibly could face the types of production delays that have hurt Boeing, Airbus' only rival in the market for large commercial aircraft.

Airbus is currently aiming to increase the number of A320 planes it builds to 22 a month from 19 and is even considering ramping that number up to 24 a month, which would be a 36 percent increase.

"Airbus must prepare itself, in a declining market, to face the competition of a rival that will have had the chance to experience difficulties sooner than us," Forgeard said.
