Roving wire-taps: An issue on which the ACLU and Bob Barr agree!

FYI, here is the text of a letter sent by the ACLU to members of the House of Representatives on October 6 of this year:

aclu.org

From the first paragraph of the letter:

We are writing to urge you to vote "No" on the Conference Report on the Intelligence Authorization Act for FY
1999, H.R. 3694. The bill would expand the circumstances under which the FBI could seek a "roving"
wiretap order, i.e., a court order that does not specify the phone that would be tapped, and it would authorize
mandatory FBI access to the product of pen registers and trap and trace devices (which record the phone
numbers dialed to and from a particular phone), and mandatory access to travel records of hotels, airlines
and car rental companies in "intelligence" as opposed to criminal investigations of persons in the United
States. All of these provisions were rejected by the House in the context of the 1996 anti-terrorism legislation.

And here is an ACLU press release commending the House for its action in 1996:

In general, the ACLU has been highly critical of the Clinton Administration's record on civil rights. (So much for the "blind love for Clinton" that "liberals" supposedly display, according to some folks here...-VBG-)

But Bob, in this century we have always had to be vigilant in protecting our civil rights. As long as we continue to be vigilant, I don't think you need worry that much about "a fascist new world order subverting our government and Constitution."
