Has America slid into the pit or what? catholic.org Federal Government Sued Over Christmas As Official Holiday CINCINNATI (CWNews.com) - A Cincinnati city lawyer, Richard Ganulin, has filed a federal lawsuit to end Christmas as a federal holiday, saying it violates the separation of church and state, but the government has responded that the holiday is being recognized for its secular nature. The Justice Department said federal courts have recognized the secular symbols of Christmas, including Santa Claus and Christmas trees. "Christmas owes its status as a national holiday to the fact that most Christmas symbols are either unrelated to Christianity or are no longer associated with Christianity in current culture," wrote Donetta Wiethe, an assistant US attorney. Ganulin, who filed his suit on August 4 as a private citizen, said, "The fact that it has a secular dimension does not in any way change the fact that Christmas is the second most holy day of the year on the Christian calendar." The American Civil Liberties Union agreed that recognition of Christmas as a federal holiday is probably a violation of the First Amendment, but said the public wants the status quo to remain and the courts would not challenge that.
