Boeing announces orders for 11 business jets

SEATTLE, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA - news) on Sunday announced orders for 11 business versions of its 737 jet, valued at $370 million, including nine aircraft that will be sold through a fractional ownership program.

Executive Jet, a unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRKa - news). is expected to take delivery in mid-1999 of the first Boeing Business Jet for its NetJets program, which allows individuals and companies to buy a share in a jet. Owners call when they need a ride and pay a fee for operating costs.

Boeing said it has committed 16 more airplanes to the NetJets program over the next four years.

Boeing did not disclose the customers for the remaining two firm jet orders.

The latest orders bring to 46 airplanes the total announced backlog for Boeing Business Jets, a joint venture between Boeing and General Electric Co (NYSE:GE - news). launched in 1996. The planes are sold unfurnished at a list price of $33.75 million each, leaving customers to invest another $7 million to $12 million for interiors with anything from a conference room to an exercise facility with hot showers.

Boeing rival Airbus Industrie [ARBU.CN] has launched a similar program to compete in the category dominated by smaller Gulfstream and Lear models, which can be faster and more versatile, with the capability to land at much smaller airports.

The first commercial delivery of the Boeing Business Jet is scheduled for December.
