I bought a 450Mhz PII for around $1,900, before upgrades. While not arguing that other buyers would emulate me, one compelling reason I went with more computing power than what my current needs dictate is to be prepared for whatever power hungry apps I may want to run in the near future.

I'm running a Celeron 300A overclocked to 450. I bought a new processor and motherboard because I don't want to ever have to wait on a computer and I most certainly did with my Pentium-133 system regardless of what that idiot NY Times author says. I have enough of that waiting crap at work with the archaic VMS system we use.
