Foreign Investment in China Beginning to Rebound

CHANGSHA, October 19 (Xinhua) -- After a two-year slow-down, foreign
investment involved in contracts China signed from January to August rose to 31.7
billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of eight percent, according to Sun
Guangxiang, Vice-Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.

This means that China has survived some of the fallout from the Asian financial
crisis, Sun told a recent forum on foreign investment in western and central parts of
China.

He said the country will continue to focus on direct foreign investment by opening
up more competitive industries like petrochemicals and construction, and
experiment with domestic commerce, foreign trade, accounting, legal consulting and
tourism.

Sun said the Chinese government will make an effort to improve its legal system
relating to foreign investment and take steps to stop illegal levies imposed on
foreign-funded enterprises.

He said that the western and central regions have their own advantages and for
foreign investment like cheap labor and potential markets.
