NEWS RELEASE TRANSMITTED BY CANADIAN CORPORATE NEWS FOR: NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS CORPORATIONTSE SYMBOL: NNC NYSE SYMBOL: NN OCTOBER 19, 1998 KANATA, ONTARIO--Networking Platform Offers Carrier-Class Survivability Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) has taken a lead in integrating asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) with optical networking technology, launching the industry's first integrated dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) platform. Developed jointly with Newbridge(r) Affiliate Cambrian Systems Corporation, this scalable, cost-effective networking solution is designed specifically for carriers providing service in metropolitan area networks. By combining DWDM-based transport with an ATM core infrastructure, this innovative solution provides a robust, resilient platform for transporting and delivering multiple services from a seamless, managed platform. Newbridge is the industry's first vendor to demonstrate a solution that delivers ATM-based Distributed Service Delivery in metropolitan area networks. As a result, carriers and service providers can provide mission critical applications such as Internet Protocol (IP), frame relay, private line and cell relay, using a scalable, flexible common network infrastructure based on optical networking technology. Deployed on the Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 MultiServices Switch, the ATM/DWDM integrated switching and transport platform enables service providers to maximize usage of their existing optical fiber cable infrastructure. By integrating switching and transport onto a single platform, carriers and service providers can simplify their overall network architecture and enhance their network and service management capabilities, thus reducing their capital and operational costs. This platform is fully managed by the industry-leading MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, which manages service providers' entire networks from a single, integrated platform, offering network and service management, network monitoring, technical support and troubleshooting. "By combining the ATM and DWDM onto a single platform, we have taken a lead in offering service providers the best of both worlds," said Olwyn Walter, Assistant Vice President, Switching Products Group Marketing, Newbridge Networks. "In addition to providing a highly scalable network infrastructure with multi-service capability, the ATM/DWDM platform offers network protection and rapid restoration, ensuring carrier-class survivability. Newbridge Networks is demonstrating the transmission of live data traffic over the ATM/DWDM platform at NETWORLD+INTEROP'98 in Atlanta, Georgia, from October 21 to October 23. Newbridge Networks designs, manufactures, markets and services networking solutions to organizations in more than 100 countries.
