Pfizer Staff Strike at French Viagra Factory, Demand Higher Pay
Paris, Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc. workers went on strike at a French factory, the only European plant that makes impotence pill Viagra, as they sought to benefit from the success of the world's best-selling impotence treatment, Agence France Presse news agency reported. During the strike, which was scheduled to last five hours and was called after Pfizer management ''refused to make acceptable proposals,'' 200 workers blocked trucks leaving the factory near Tours, central France, AFP said. In addition to higher pay, workers asked for a 5,000 French franc ($917) bonus, AFP said, citing the union. Pfizer said last week third-quarter sales of Viagra, which got European Union marketing approval on Sept. 15, slowed to $141 million from $411 million in the second quarter, following the most successful ever U.S. introduction of any drug in April.
